NBA
The Detroit Pistons’ season is over, following a 100-98 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers last night. The game was tight all the way. Kyrie Irving’s three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining put the Cavs up by four, and he was in Reggie Jackson’s face to force an errant shot as time expired. Jackson pleaded for a foul call, but didn’t get it. Marcus Morris led Detroit with 24 points. Tobias Harris added 23. After sweeping Detroit, Cleveland will move on to face either Atlanta or Boston in the next round. The Celtics and Hawks are tied 2-2 after Boston’s 104-95 win yesterday. In other games, the Spurs completed a sweep of the Grizzlies with a 116-95 victory. Golden State pounded Houston 121-94 – the Warriors lead that set 3-1.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians 6-3 on Sunday. Both starting pitchers left the game early – Cleveland’s Carlos Carrasco with a hamstring injury in the third inning, and Detroit’s Shane Greene with a blister on his pitching hand in the top of the fourth. Cleveland jumped all over Tigers’ reliever Drew VerHagen, who gave up five runs in less than two innings. The Tigers have lost seven of their last nine games, and open a four-game series at home against Oakland tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Kendall Graveman. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Before yesterday’s game, the Tigers placed closer Francisco Rodriguez on the emergency family leave list. There’s no word as to what the emergency is. Rodriguez must remain on the list for at least three games, and can miss no more than seven.
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5 yesterday. Scooter Gennett and Alex Presley homered, as Milwaukee scored six runs in the sixth inning. Starter Wily Peralta gave up four runs over six innings, and earned his first win of the season.
The Brewers take today off, and open a series in Chicago against the Cubs tomorrow. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.
NHL
Washington advanced to the next round of the NHL playoffs with a 1-0 win over the Flyers. Dallas eliminated Minnesota with a 5-4 victory. The Islanders moved on with a 2-1 double-overtime win over Florida.
MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team lost to Wayne State 7-2 Saturday morning; then fell to Northwood 6-3 yesterday.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team won two games against North Central University on Saturday, 6-3 and 5-2. In the first game, Aaron Froelich went the distance for the win. Patrick Coles had two hits, and scored twice. Coles pitched a complete game to win the second contest. Adam Johns had three hits.
On Friday, The Lions split a doubleheader at North Central University. The Lions lost the opener 9-6. Joey Krug drove in two runs. Finlandia won the second game 10-7. Seth Ensor homered and drove in three runs. Patrick Coles also drove in three runs, and Luke Paul had three hits.
