The Detroit Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4 yesterday. Jordan Zimmermann pitched six shutout innings. Nick Castellanos gave Detroit an early lead with a two-run double in the fourth inning, and sealed the win with a two-run homer in the seventh. The Tigers took three of the four games in their home-and-home series with the Pirates, and begin a weekend set at Houston tonight. Mike Pelfrey will pitch against Dallas Keuchel.
Jaime Garcia gave up just one hit, as the Saint Louis Cardinals blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 7-0 yesterday. Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta struggled again, and gave up five runs over five innings. The Brewers open a weekend series at Pittsburgh tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Jeff Locke.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings play game two of their opening-round playoff series tonight at Tampa. The Lightning lead the best-of-seven set one game to none. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons open the playoffs Sunday afternoon at Cleveland at 3:00.
High School
In softball, Calumet plays at a tournament at the Wisconsin Dells today and tomorrow.
In baseball, Hancock plays at Norway.
Finlandia
The Finlandia softball team plays a triple-header at Maranatha Baptist University this afternoon, then plays two more games at Wisconsin-River Falls tomorrow.
MTU
The MTU men’s tennis team entertains Lake Superior State tomorrow morning.
Northern Michigan University has hired two new assistant coaches. Dan Wodicka will be the running backs coach. He spent the past two seasons as receivers coach at Johns Hopkins. D.J. Pirkle will coach the defensive line. He was a defensive assistant at Western Michigan the past three seasons.
NFL
The schedules for the 2016 NFL season were released yesterday.
The Detroit Lions begin the season at Indianapolis. They have two nationally-televised games, including the Thanksgiving contest against the Vikings, and a Monday night game at Dallas in week 16.
The Packers will open on the road at Jacksonville. They’re scheduled for five prime time games, including a Thursday night match against the Bears, and a Monday night meeting with the Eagles.
The Lions and Packers will meet in week three in Green Bay, and in week 17 in Detroit.
