NCAA
Villanova won the NCAA Division I men’s basketball title with a thrilling 77-74 victory over North Carolina last night. ‘Nova led by three when UNC’s Marcus Paige hit a long, off-balance three pointer to tie it with 4.7 seconds remaining. The Tar Heels’ defense then doubled up on Ryan Arcidiacono as he hurried the ball upcourt for the Wildcats. Instead of forcing the shot, Arcidiacono dished the ball off to uncovered Kris Jenkins, whose uncontested jumper from the top of the key swished through as the buzzer sounded.

Connecticut and Syracuse will play for the women’s Division I championship tonight.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers opened their season with a 12-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants yesterday. Brewers starter Wily Peralta gave up five runs over four innings. Ariel Pena surrendered three consecutive home runs in the eighth inning. Scooter Gennett and Jonathan Villar homered for Milwaukee. The Brewers host the Giants again tonight. Jimmy Nelson will start against Johnny Cueto.

The Detroit Tigers finally open their season tonight, with an interleague game at Miami. Justin Verlander will pitch against Wei-Yin Chen. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will play at Miami tonight. There were no games played last night, so Detroit and Indiana remain tied for the seventh and eighth playoff positions in the Eastern Conference, with Indiana holding the tiebreaker. Chicago is two games back. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will host the Flyers tomorrow night. Face-off is at 8:00. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Wings still have two potential routes to a playoff berth. They remain in third place in the Atlantic Division, a point ahead of Boston. The top three teams get in. Each team has three games remaining, including a head-to-head match Thursday night. Detroit remains tied with Philadelphia for the final Eastern Conference wild card berth. The Flyers have four games remaining.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have added two more veteran free agents to their roster. Defensive end Wallace Gilberry played the past several seasons for the Bengals. Tight end Matthew Mulligan played for the Bills last season.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team’s games at Northland College this afternoon have been canceled because of weather and poor field conditions.
