GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers won Great Lakes Hockey League tournament yesterday by defeating the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 5-2. The Pioneers took advantage of three shorthanded goals to claim their second-straight championship. Aaron Sturos put the Pioneers up 1-0 in the first period. Ted Pietila and Ryan Sullivan scored in the second period, as Portage stretched the lead to 3-1. Sturos and Pietila each scored in the third period to put the game away. The Ice Dogs’ final score off winning goalie Mike Madosh came in the closing seconds.
In pool play over the weekend, the Pioneers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 10-1, and lost to the Ice Dogs 4-2. That was good enough to earn the wild card position in the semifinals Saturday night, where they upset the top-seeded West Bend Bombers 5-3. The Wolverines lost their other pool game 7-1 to the Ice Dogs.

The Detroit Red Wings will host the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday night. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Wings got some help yesterday in their quest to make the playoffs. Boston lost to Chicago, so Detroit still leads the Bruins by a point in the race for the third guaranteed spot in the Atlantic Division. Each team has three regular-season games remaining, including a head-to-head match on Thursday. Philadelphia lost to Pittsburgh, so Detroit maintains a one-point lead for the final Eastern Conference wild card berth. The Flyers have four regular-season games remaining. The Wings play their final home game against the Flyers Wednesday night. Faceoff is at 8:00. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons continue their fight for a playoff berth at Miami tomorrow night. Indiana won last night to move ahead of the Pistons into seventh position in the Eastern Conference. Though their records are identical, the Pacers own the tiebreaker. Chicago also won, so the Bulls are two games back. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team defeated Findlay 6-3 on Saturday, then lost 5-4 to Hillsdale yesterday.
NCAA
Villanova and North Carolina will play for the NCAA Division I men’s basketball title tonight. Hear the championship game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Connecticut and Syracuse will play for the Division I women’s title tomorrow night. Last night, the Huskies eliminated Oregon State 80-51, and the Orange ousted Washington 80-59.
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers open their regular season this afternoon at home against the Giants. Wily Peralta will start against Madison Bumgarner.
The Detroit Tigers open their season tomorrow night, with an interleague game at Miami. Justin Verlander will pitch against Wei-Yin Chen. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
