Pioneers-Wolverines FeatureGLHL
The Great Lakes Hockey League Tournament opens today in De Pere. The Portage Lake Pioneers face the Fox Cities Ice Dogs in pool play at 1:00, and then take on the Calumet Wolverines at 7:00. The Wolverines then take on the Ice Dogs tomorrow at noon. The winners of the three pools advance to the finals, along with one wild-card team. Hear all of the Pioneers’ and Wolverines’ games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host Minnesota tonight. Detroit remains a point behind Boston in the race for the third guaranteed Atlantic Division playoff spot, and two points behind Philadelphia in the race for the second Eastern Conference wild card berth. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons entertain the Mavericks this evening. The Bulls won last night, and the Pacers lost, so Detroit remains in seventh place in the Eastern Conference… a game ahead of Indiana, and two up on Chicago. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball games at Northland College yesterday afternoon were canceled because of the weather. The Lions are scheduled to play two games at Maranatha University today, and two more tomorrow.

The Finlandia baseball team’s games at Lakeland College this afternoon and tomorrow have been postponed because of the weather.

MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team entertains Findlay tomorrow morning, and Hillsdale Sunday morning.

MLB
In spring training baseball yesterday, J.D. Martinez hit three home runs, as the Detroit Tigers outslugged the New York Yankees 10-6. Victor Martinez and Ian Kinsler also homered. Logan Kensing opened the game with two scoreless innings, and got the win. The Tigers face the Rays this afternoon.

Kensing’s performance makes him the leading candidate to fill the final bullpen spot available on the opening day roster.

Opening day starter Justin Verlander threw five tune-up innings in a minor league game. He gave up two home runs – one to prospect JaCoby Jones, and one to his brother – Tigers minor-leaguer Ben Verlander, who played at Class A Lakeland last season.

Nelson
Nelson

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Houston Astros 6-1 last night. Ryan Braun homered. Jimmy Nelson pitched 5-2/3rds innings of shutout ball to get the win. The Brewers face the Astros in Houston again this afternoon.

The Brewers added three players to the disabled list yesterday. Reliever Sean Nolin has been diagnosed with an injury in his pitching elbow, and could be out for some time. Reliever Zack Jones has a shoulder problem, and outfielder Rymer Liriano is still recovering from being hit in the face by a pitch.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament continues with the semifinal games tomorrow night. Villanova plays Oklahoma, and North Carolina takes on Syracuse. Hear both games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
