Gibson Cup
The Portage Lake Pioneers drew first blood in the Gibson Cup series Friday night, with a 7-5 victory over the Calumet Wolverines at Dee Stadium. The scoring started quickly. Portage Lake netted the first four goals over a 12-minute span in the first period. Calumet responded with three goals late in the first, and tied the score at four-each with a the only goal of the second period. Connor Hannon scored the eventual game-winner in the third period. Hannon finished with two goals and an assist. Charlie Turner had three assists for Portage Lake. Eric Bausano scored twice for Calumet, and added an assist. Jeff Erkkila had three assists. Brett Beaudry got the win in goal, as the Pioneers outshot the Wolverines 47-27. Game two of the best-of-three series will be played tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum. If a third game is needed, it will be played Tuesday at Dee Stadium. All of the games will be broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

North Central faces Waterford Our Lady in the Boys Class D State Basketball Tournament championship game this morning at 10:00. We’ll broadcast the Class D and C final games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
MTU
Three Michigan Tech hockey players have signed professional contracts. Alex Petan inked a deal with the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League. C.J. Eick and Malcolm Gould are headed to the East Coast Hockey League – Eick with the Utah Grizzlies, and Gould with the Indy Fuel.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Pittsburgh Penguins this afternoon. Face-off is at 2:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons continued their drive for the playoffs with a 112-105 victory over the Charlotte Hornets Friday night. Detroit scored 72 points in the first half – the highest-scoring half the team has turned in this season. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the team with 21 points. Marcus Morris added 20. With nine regular-season games remaining, the Pistons lead Chicago by two games in the race for the eighth Eastern Conference playoff spot, and trail seventh-place by a single percentage point. The Pistons entertain the Hawks tonight.
NCAA
All four of the top seeds have reached the regional finals in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Virginia and North Carolina advanced with victories Friday night. The Cavaliers will face Syracuse in the Midwest final tomorrow. The Tarheels will take on Notre Dame in the East final tomorrow. Tonight, top-seeded Oregon will play second-seeded Oklahoma in the West final, and top-seeded Kansas will meet second-seeded Villanova in the South title game. The University of Michigan defeated Notre Dame 3-2 in overtime in opening round play in the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Tournament Friday night. The Wolverines will play North Dakota in the quarterfinals tonight. Minnesota-Duluth and Boston College also won opening-round games Friday. The WCHA’s only representative in the tournament, Ferris State, will open against St. Cloud State this afternoon.
Veteran hockey official Oliver “Butch” Mousseau has died. Mousseau suffered a severe head injury when he fell to the ice during warm-ups for a WCHA playoff semifinal game in Grand Rapids on March 18th. WCHA Supervisor of Officials Greg Shepherd called Mousseau “a consummate professional on the ice, and a wonderful, positive human being.” Mousseau was the first Native American to officiate games at the sport’s top level. He is survived by his wife and three children. Mousseau was 48 years old.
MLB
In spring training baseball Friday, the Tigers turned a triple play against Atlanta, but it went for naught, as the game was rained out after four innings. The triple play came in the second inning, when the Braves loaded the bases against Shane Greene. Willians Astudillo hit a sinking line drive to shortstop. Jose Iglesias did not field it cleanly – perhaps, unintentionally, to create a force play at any base – then picked the ball up and tossed it to Ian Kinsler at second. The runner who had just left second base was diving back toward the bag, anticipating that Iglesias would catch the line drive. Instead, he was tagged out by Kinsler, who then stepped on the bag to force out the runner coming from first base, and threw to first base in time to retire Astudillo. Greene gave up three runs on five hits before the game was called with Atlanta leading 3-1. The Tigers face Philadelphia today. Justin Verlander will make his final start of the spring.
The Milwaukee Brewers scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning, and edged the Chicago Cubs 5-4 on Friday. The Brewers face the Diamondbacks this afternoon. Matt Garza will start.
The Brewers have placed pitcher Zack Jones on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. Jones was selected in the Rule Five draft from the Twins. If Milwaukee doesn’t keep him on the major-league roster all season, the team must offer him back to Minnesota.
