While the Michigan Senate cleared a package of bills Tuesday to overhaul Detroit Public Schools and pay down the districts debt over ten years, the chamber still has another DPS issue to address: an emergency spending bill to keep the district open for the rest of the school year.
State Senator Goeff Hansen says the Senate will take up the $48.7 million supplemental this week.
But a bill connected to the emergency spending measure that requires the Financial Review Commission to oversee DPS’ finances is getting a lukewarm response in the Senate, lining up a showdown between the House and Senate in the two days leading up to the legislature’s spring break.
House Speaker Kevin Cotter says if the Senate only passes the funding portion then DPS won’t get the money it needs to keep the doors open.
The district says it will run out of money to pay teachers by April 8th.
