Team CC
The Team Copper Country hockey squad fell just short of a state championship this weekend, losing to St. Clair Shores 3-0 last evening in the championship game of the Midget AA Tier Two state tournament. The game was scoreless until the second period, when the Saints found the net on a power play. St. Clair extended the lead with just over five minutes remaining in the third period, and sealed the win with a late empty-netter. Dawson Kero stopped 19 shots in goal for Team CC. Team CC reached the finals by sweeping their opponents in pool play Friday and Saturday, and defeating the Flint Firebirds 6-4 in the semifinals yesterday morning.
WCHA
Ferris State is the unlikely winner of the WCHA tournment. The fourth-seeded Bulldogs edged second-seeded Minnesota State 2-1 in the title game Saturday in Grand Rapids. Ferris advanced to the final game by ousting top-seeded Michigan Tech 1-0 on Friday. The Bulldogs will be the only team representing the WCHA in the NCAA tournament.
MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team lost 8-1 at Walsh on Saturday, and 8-1 at Tiffin yesterday.
Finlandia
The Finlandia baseball team split a doubleheader with the Milwaukee School of Engineering yesterday. The Lions edged the Raiders 2-1 in the opener. Luke Paul went the distance, and struck out eight. In the nightcap, the Lions were held to just three hits in a 5-0 loss.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Tampa tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Bucks tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NCAA
The regional semifinals are set in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In the South, Kansas will face Maryland, and Miami will take on Villanova. In the East, North Carolina will face Indiana, and Notre Dame will play Wisconsin. In the Midwest, Virginia will meet Iowa State, and Gonzaga will face Syracuse. MLB
In spring training baseball yesterday, Shane Greene turned in a strong start, as half of the Detroit Tigers defeated Atlanta 8-2. Greene gave up three hits over five innings as he continues his comeback from surgery to repair an aneurysm in his throwing shoulder. The other half of the Tigers scored four runs in the eighth inning to edge the Nationals 7-6. Justin Verlander gave up three runs over five innings. The Tigers face the Phillies this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson threw six effective innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers got past the Dodgers 3-1 yesterday. The Brewers will split their squad for games against the Angels and Diamondbacks today.
