Senate Approves Money for Firefighter's Cancer Fund

Lawmakers in the Michigan Senate have approved legislation adding $1 million to a fund that covers the cost of cancer treatments for first responders.

The vote came a week after 150 firefighters filled the Senate gallery, pushing state senators to add money to the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund.

The fund was created last year but no money had ever been put in it.

State Senator Marty Knollenberg told lawmakers on the Senate floor once first responders are done fighting fires it’s up to the state to take care of them.

He says the $1 million in the fund will help do that.

The measure now moves over to the Michigan House for consideration.

The chairman of the Senate appropriations committee says more money will be added to the fund in the next fiscal year.
