It’s the second oldest trophy in hockey and it’s back in the Copper Country where it started.
It’s 40 pounds with a chalice made of pure silver, the MacNaughton Cup was first awarded in 1913. Only the Stanley Cup is older.
For the first time in 40 years, the Michigan Tech Huskies were able to bring it home this season, along with a share of the WCHA championship.
The university put the cup on display for an hour Tuesday at the Wadsworth Dining Hall on campus.
For some, getting close to it was a dream come true.
Calumet Resident Greg Koory said, “Just never got to see it, never got to get close to it. I always…I just vowed that I wanted to touch it. I heard it was a hefty thing. We have pictures up at the Calumet Colosseum, it’s a rink up in Calumet, and there’s pictures of them together at The Dee Stadium. It’s just one of those things I wanted to see Michigan Tech do—get it in my lifetime.
It’s the eighth time Tech hockey has won the trophy.
As co-champions of the league, Michigan Tech will hold on to the MacNaughton Cup for six months.
After that, they turn it over to Minnesota State.
The Huskies will travel to Grand Rapids for the WCHA Tournament this weekend.
