Legislation will be introduced this week to open up the governor’s office and state lawmakers to Freedom of Information Act requests.
Right now Michigan is one of two states that exempts both from FOIA.
State Representative Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, is one of the bill sponsors and says it shouldn’t be too hard to implement the changes to the governor’s office if the bills become law because the administration already handles FOIA requests.
The legislature, however, would be starting from scratch.
State Representative Jeremy Moss, D-Southfield, is the other sponsor.
He hopes by showing a bipartisan front both parties will stop their finger pointing over who is trying to hide what behind FOIA and work towards openness and transparency.
Moss and McBroom will detail their plans in a press conference Wednesday.
