No Fault Strategy Could Change

Another attempt may be made to change Michigan’s No-Fault insurance law.

Currently unlimited medical coverage is required in car crash injuries.

The insurance industry wants to offer policy holders a limited amount of coverage, in exchange for a lower premium. Insurers have not been successful in changing the law however.

One proposal would test the idea in Detroit only, where there’s a high percentage of uninsured drivers because of the high cost of insurance there.

Pete Kuhnmuench of the Insurance Institute of Michigan says he is now getting a push from some non-Detroit legislators who also want to have the lower coverage-lower premium insurance.

He does not have details on which other areas of the state would be in any new proposal, but it would be those areas which already have a high percentage of uninsured drivers.

Opponents of the move say Michigan’s unlimited coverage should continue to be required statewide.
