Jacques Wins Twice – Sunday Sports Wrap

MLB: Tigers Fall to M’s
Drew Smyly struggled through four innings, as the Tigers lost to the Mariners 3-2 Saturday night. Smyly needed 105 pitches to get through his outing, and allowed all three Seattle runs. Miguel Cabrera homered for Detroit, and Ian Kinsler nearly put the Tigers in the lead with a long blow with two runners on base in the seventh inning that was caught at the left-center field wall.

Detroit wraps up that series at Seattle this afternoon. Max Scherzer will face Roenis Elias. Hear the first pitch at 4:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Cubs Blank Brewers
Wily Peralta suffered through his worst loss of the season, as the Brewers fell to the Cubs 8-0. Peralta gave up six runs before leaving in the sixth inning. Milwaukee collected only four hits.

The Brewers host the Cubs again this afternoon. Kyle Lohse will start against Jeff Samardzija.

– In Boys’ Division One, Kingsford took an easy victory Houghton placed seventh, and Calumet ninth. For the Gremlins, Jacob Colling won the 3,200 meter run. Brad Ohtinen took second in the shot put. For the Copper Kings, Eric Lasanen finished third in the pole vault. Paul Torola placed third in the 110-hurdles. Full results are here.
– In Girls’ Division One, Calumet finished fourth, and Houghton seventh. For the Copper Kings, Chelsea Jacques took the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Hailey Wickstrom won the high jump, and the 400-meter relay team placed second. For the Gremlins, Annika Wheeler won the shot put. Elisa Jurmu placed second in the discus and the high jump. – In Boys’ Division Two, Hancock finished third, and L’Anse sixth. For the Bulldogs, Gage Hawthorne won the shot put. Jacob Jarvis took the 110-hurdles and the 300-hurdles. The 800-meter relay team placed second. For the Purple Hornets, Ryan LaBerge won the 200-meter dash. Levi Hoskins took second in the discus. – In Girls’ Division Two, Hancock placed seventh, and L’Anse ninth. For the Bulldogs, Olivia Rouleau took third in the discus, and Ellie Lucier was third in the 300-hurdles. Full results are here.
– In Boys’ Division Three, Lake Linden-Hubbell placed fourth, Chassell 13th, and Dollar Bay 16th. For the Lakes, Blake Dupuis and Trent Ambuehl placed second and third in the pole vault. Trevor Ongie took third in the 110-hurdles and the 300-hurdles. The 400-meter relay team placed first, and the 800-meter relay team placed second. – In Girls’ Division Three, Lake Linden-Hubbell placed sixth, Ontonagon seventh, Dollar Bay 15th, and Baraga tied for 18th. For the Lakes, Carli Ongie won the 800-meter run. Sarah Audette took second in the pole vault. Jana Hendrickson was third in the 400-meter dash. The 400-meter relay team placed third. For the Gladiators, Lori Wardynski won the 300-hurdles, and the 1,600-meter relay team placed first. Full results are here.

Kilpela Wins Breakers to Bay Run
Jonathan Kilpela of Atlantic Mine took an easy win at the five-mile Breakers to Bay Run Saturday morning. Kilpela finished more than two minutes ahead of Ryan Towles from Dollar Bay. Paul Lyle from Chassell placed third. Amy Janeshek from Hancock was the top women’s finisher. 86 runners finished the race, which was a fundraiser for the Stanton Township Schools Wellness Program.
