HANCOCK, Mich. – UP Health System – Portage is donating $100,000 to the Michigan Technological University Athletic Department over a four-year span to enhance student-athlete health and wellness.
“Our partnership with Michigan Tech is so important in our mission of making our communities healthier,” said UPHS-Portage CEO Jeff Lang. “The Huskies are a top tier athletic department in the country, and we love being able to support these student-athletes as they strive for success. This long-time partnership has been so important to both organizations and we truly value that relationship.”
UP Health System – Portage has worked closely with Michigan Tech to ensure medical and athletic training professionals are readily available to student-athletes for recognition, evaluation and immediate care of athletic injuries, rehabilitation, and post-injury reconditioning.
The teamwork of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, and physicians has helped build Michigan Tech Athletics into one of the most respected programs in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
“We are thankful for our partnership with UP Health System – Portage and for this gift,” said Michigan Tech Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret. “It will impact our 400-plus student-athletes with enhanced health and wellness services and help position them to compete at the highest level nationally.”
UP Health System – Portage operates a facility on Michigan Tech’s campus, offering primary care, sports medicine and rehabilitation services to Tech students, staff and the community. The University Center location was constructed in 2000 and expanded in 2011. Portage also operates a pharmacy at the location and provides teaching and research space to the Michigan Tech Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology.
As both UP Health System – Portage and Michigan Tech continue to evolve, grow and strengthen their respective commitments to the Upper Peninsula region and the entire state of Michigan, new opportunities will abound to partner in efforts that, united, so steadfastly serve the area’s youth.
