Courser, Gamrat Inspired Bill Aired in House Committee

Lawmakers on a Michigan House committee are vetting legislation to prohibit a legislator who resigns from office, or is kicked out, from turning around and running in a special election to fill the now-vacant seat.

State Representative Lisa Posthumus-Lyons is behind the bill.

She says it’s not fair for taxpayers to foot the bill for a special election created by someone leaving office, if that person is going to turn around and run in that special election.

Former State Representatives Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat did just that last November.

He resigned from the House amid scandal in September and she was expelled.

The two announced days later they would run in a special election to fill their old seats.

The legislation is awaiting a vote in a House committee.
