More and more police in the state are buying and using body cameras, and it has raised the question of how all the video will be stored.
State and local police are telling lawmakers in Lansing that the cost of secured storage of the video will not be cheap.
State Police say the state will need to spend up to $50 million for their department alone.
That does not include local police and county sheriff’s departments.
Dave LaMontaine of the Police Officers Association of Michigan, told a legislative panel last week the storage is going to be a significant problem because body cameras are becoming a common trend among police agencies as they continue to purchase camera units.
Supporters of body cameras say the video can protect both police officers as well as criminal suspects.
