A Michigan House committee is giving legislation that cracks down on aggressive panhandling a onceover.
It would make it illegal to intimidate a person, or threaten them, so they’ll give the panhandler money.
State Representative Mike McCready is sponsoring the bills and says he’s seen an uptick in complaints from people who have been approached in grocery store parking lots by someone asking for money and feeling uncomfortable about it.
Lawmakers iffy on the bill say it’s broad and subjective; what may be intimidating to one person may not be to another.
The measures wouldn’t trump a local ordinance already on the books but would cover cities and townships in the state where no local ordinance is in place.
