Attorney General Warns Against Giving Money To Certain Charitable Organizations For Flint Water Crisis

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has issued a warning about a website called “FlintUnleaded.org,” and its owner, Derek Jones of Texas.

Schuette says there are potential charitable solicitation violations by the website.

He says there is a lack of transparency regarding website operators and that it could be in violation of state law.

Schuette notes that of particular concern is that donations to the website purport to benefit a local nonprofit corporation, known as P.A.P.A.S. (Pick a Place and Start), which had been dissolved by the state and had its status revoked by the IRS because of a failure to file annual reports to the state and federal governments.

FlintUnleaded bills itself as a being geared toward raising awareness and funding for the Flint Community to improve the quality of life to a city poisoned by its waters.

While stopping short of calling it a scam, the attorney general issued a statement saying those who try to take advantage of the giving spirit of those trying to help Flint won’t be tolerated.
