The Michigan House has given the go-ahead to a bill that clears up a new state law that restricts what local governments, schools and libraries can say about ballot issues.
The current law, which a federal judge recently put on hold because it was vague, prohibits using taxpayer dollars to talk about ballot issues within 60 days of an election.
State Representative Lisa Posthumus-Lyons, R-Alto, says the measure takes out the 60 day window and allows locals to talk about ballot issues as long as the information they pass along is factual and neutral.
The idea is to keep taxpayer dollars from being used on advocacy campaigns.
Critics say it’s still too restrictive.
The measure now moves over to the Michigan Senate.
