Ice Shanty Removal Dates Approaching

With spring just around the corner, anglers will soon have to tear down their ice shanties.

The deadline for shanty removal in the northern Lower Peninsula and on the Michigan-Wisconsin boarder is midnight March 15th and March 31st in the Upper Peninsula, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

Shanties on Lake St. Clair must be removed by Sunday.

DNR spokesman, John Pepin, says regardless of those dates, ice shanties have to come down as soon as the ice cannot safely hold them.

Owners of shanties that fall through the ice could face up to 30 days in jail and up to a $500 fine.

Pepin says if the DNR has to retrieve the structure, the owner could also be responsible for reimbursing the agency for up to three times the cost of removal.
