U.P. Township Reaches -40 Degrees

It certainly was cold in the Keweenaw over the weekend, but not as cold as it got in one spot in the Western U.P.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Iron County’s Amasa Township had a temperature of negative 40 degrees Sunday morning.

That’s colder than the temperature recorded in any other state in the country, including Alaska.

The township, with a population of just over 350 people, is northwest of Iron Mountain, near the eastern edge of the Ottawa National Forest.
