Morning Sports for Tuesday, May 27th:
MLB: Tigers Ripped Again
The struggling Tigers gave up five home runs… including a grand slam… and lost to the Athletics yesterday 10-0. Four of those homers came off Drew Smyly… who gave up six runs over five innings. Since sweeping the Red Sox at Boston, the Tigers have lost seven of their last eight games.
Detroit continues that series at Oakland tonight. Max Scherzer will face Sonny Gray. Hear the first pitch at 10:05 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Brewers Fall in 10th
The Orioles scored twice with two outs in the ninth against Francisco Rodriguez to force extra innings… then scored another two-out run off Rob Wooten in the 10th to beat the Brewers 7-6. Milwaukee put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth and the bottom of the 10th… but each inning ended with a double play.
The Brewers host the Orioles again this evening. Matt Garza will start against Wei-Yin Chen.
Syrjanen to Retire
Forest Park girls’ basketball coach Jeff Syrjanen is stepping down. Syrjanen won 170 games in nine seasons with the Trojans. He took one team to the state semi-finals… and reached the state championship game this past season. Both of those teams featured Lexi Gussert… who set the all-time Upper Peninsula career scoring record, was named “Miss Basketball” this spring, and will play at Michigan State in the fall.
