The second half of winter begins with a celebration that is as cool as it gets.
Some activities of the 94th Winter Carnival, hosted by Michigan Tech and the Blue Key Honor Society, have already begun.
But this is the week things really start to heat up.

Saturday night saw the crowning of this year’s Winter Carnival Queen, Savanna Curtis–sponsored by the Air Force ROTC and Cyberia Café in Houghton.
A fourth year Chemical Engineering major, with a minor in Bioprocess Engineering, Curtis says she was surprised when she was asked to compete.
Besides getting to work with the other candidates and meet new people in the community, being part of the Winter Carnival Queen pageant is fun in other ways too.
Work continues on the mammoth snow statues as Wednesday night’s All-Nighter approaches.
Statue judging will take place Thursday morning and the Torchlight Parade and Fireworks are on Saturday.
