In high school hockey Friday night…
– Calumet took a 3-0 lead, but couldn’t hold it, and settled for a 3-3 tie with U of D Jesuit. Brent Loukus had a goal and an assist for the Copper Kings, and Josh Larson and Daylen Anderson each scored. Those teams play again this afternoon at the Colosseum. – Houghton fell to Birmingham Brother Rice 6-1 at the Soo Lions Showcase Friday night. The Gremlins take on Dearborn Divine Child this afternoon.
– No results were reported from the tournament in Merrill, where L’Anse is playing along with Medford and Sparta.
In boys high school basketball Friday night…
– L’Anse lost at Ewen-Trout Creek 74-40.
In the girls action Friday night…
– Houghton shut down Westwood 55-29. Sloane Zenner led the Gremlins with 12 points.
– Hancock plays got past Jeffers 38-34.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City smothered Republic-Michigamme 40-17. Carli Daavettila scored 15 for the Blue Bolts.
– Chassell welcomes Wakefield-Marenisco.
– Baraga stifled Bessemer 61-18.
– Ontonagon downed Ewen-Trout Creek 58-28.
MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with 19th-ranked Minnesota-State Friday night. The Mavericks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second period, but Alex Petan responded quickly with a goal for the Huskies to tie the game. MSU retook the lead late in the second period. Mark Auk found the net to even the score in the third period. Jamie Phillips stopped 30 shots. Those teams play again tonight. Face-off is at 7:07 at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
Both MTU basketball teams play at Grand Valley this afternoon.
NMU
The Northern hockey team lost to Alaska-Fairbanks 3-2 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.
Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams play at Ferris State this afternoon.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost 7-1 at St. Norbert University Friday night. Thomas Malkmus scored the Lions’ only goal. The Lions face the Green Knights again this afternoon in DePere.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell to Marian University 1-0 Friday night. Taylor Gustafson stopped 29 shots in goal for the Lions. Those teams play again this afternoon. Face-off is at 2:00 at the Houghton County Arena.
Both Finlandia basketball teams play at Northland College this afternoon.
GLHL
The score from the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Monroe Blues Friday night was not reported. The Pioneers will host the Marquette Iron Rangers tomorrow afternoon at 1:30. The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will entertain the Philadelphia Flyers tomorrow night.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Golden State Warriors tonight. Ben Wallace’s number-three jersey will be retired at the game.
NFL
The NFL Divisional Playoffs will be held this weekend. Today, Kansas City plays at New England at 4:35, and Green Bay plays at Arizona at 8:15. On Sunday, Seattle plays at Carolina at 1:05, and Pittsburgh plays at Denver at 4:40. Hear all four games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Packers will finish their season without tight end Andrew Quarless. Quarless missed much of the regular season with a knee injury, which flared up again during the Pack’s victory over Washington last Sunday.
The Detroit Lions will keep Jim Caldwell as their head coach. The announcement was made yesterday, after Caldwell met with new general manager Bob Quinn. The Lions have also hired former Jacksonville Jaguars director of college scouting Kyle O’Brien as the team’s new director of player personnel. O’Brien and Quinn worked together for a decade with the New England Patriots.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers have avoided arbitration with shortstop Jose Iglesias. He’s agreed to a one-year deal worth a bit more than two-million dollars. Detroit’s only remaining arbitration-eligible player is outfielder J.D. Martinez. He and the team exchanged salary proposals Friday, in advance of a potential hearing next month.
The Milwaukee Brewers avoided arbitration with all three of their eligible players. Shortstop Jean Segura agreed to a 2.6-million dollar contract for this season. Pitcher Will Smith signed for 1.5-million. Pitchers Wily Peralta has also signed a contract, but terms were not made available.
