60 DPS Schools Cancel Classes After Teachers Call in Sick Again

Teachers at Detroit Public Schools began this week the same way they ended last week – with a round of sick outs.

Nearly 60 schools closed Monday because teachers called in sick.

The sick outs are part of a district-wide protest of the working conditions at DPS, fear of the district’s future and concern with the governor’s plan to help get DPS out of debt.

The district says it might be out of money as soon as April.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says he will tour a few schools Tuesday to see the conditions teachers are working in.

Meanwhile, Detroit Democrats in the Michigan House want a hearing in Lansing on the teaching conditions at DPS. State lawmakers return from their holiday break Wednesday.
