U.S. Coast Guard Warns About Snow-Covered Thin Ice

The United States Coast Guard has issued a warning for everyone to be careful when walking on any ice that may be covering Lake Superior, the St. Mary’s River and northern Lake Michigan and Huron and other bodies of water.

The Coast Guard says the winter storm has dropped several inches of snow on parts of the state.

And often, snow can accumulate on semi frozen bodies of water and create the impression that it’s safe to walk on.

In a news release, the guard says residents should be especially wary of cracks, slushy areas, seams, pressure ridges and darker areas, which usually means thinner ice.

Other dangerous areas include bridges, inlets and outlets, where ice is often thinner.

And even if you believe the ice is safe, you should remember to get current conditions and weather, and take appropriate clothing and equipment to ensure safety.
