Tech Hoops Teams Fall – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
Hancock Hockey LogoIn high school hockey Saturday…
– Lee Pietila scored his second goal of the game in overtime, as Brighton edged Calumet 5-4. The Copper Kings led most of the way, 2-1 after the first period and 4-3 after the second. Matt Kahra’s goal with two minutes remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime. Ian Carroll stopped 38 shots in the loss.
– Hancock spotted Novi an early 2-0 lead, then roared back to claim a 5-2 victory.

Friday night…
– A Reid Hamar shot through a screen after six minutes of non-stop action in the third period pushed Hancock past Brighton 3-1. Brighton, ranked second in the state in Division One, took an early lead 84 seconds into the game as Brad Halonen put one in on the outside post. Hancock tied the contest on Alex Nordstrom’s short-hander three minutes into the second period and the score remained tied until Hamar’s game-winner in the third. Cory Tourtillott tossed one into the empty net to finish the scoring. Goalie Dawson Kero stopped 30 shots for Hancock, now 9-5 on the year, while Brighton’s Tyler Roy saved 23.
– Calumet defeated Novi 3-1.

In girls high school basketball Saturday, Hancock fell to Marquette 48-34 in the championship game at the Marquette tournament. Maija Sebbas led the Bulldogs with 16 points.

– Hancock defeated Ashland 41-37 at the Marquette Tournament. Sebbas scored 29. See video highlights from the game here.
– Houghton stopped Lake Linden-Hubbell 52-32. Sloane Zenner scored 16 for the Gremlins. See video highlights from the game here.
– Jeffers lost to Ontonagon 56-47.
– Chassell edged Bessemer 35-34.
– Baraga shut down Watersmeet 53-25.
– L’Anse lost at Stephenson 48-29.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team lost to seventh-ranked Ashland 69-63 Saturday. The Huskies trailed by 14 points with eight minutes remaining. They closed the gap to just one point in the final minute, but the Eagles regrouped and held on for the win. Morgan Anderson led a balanced Tech attack with 14 points.

Monroe

The Tech men’s team fell to Ashland 73-67. The game was tied at 67 with 46 seconds remaining, but the Eagles sank a three-pointer, and closed the game out with several free throws. Kyle Monroe scored 24 for the Huskies.

At the Desert Hockey Classic in Arizona, Michigan Tech will face Yale in the championship game today at noon. Video coverage of the game will streamed at no charge through the Pac 12 website here. The Huskies advanced to the title game with a 4-2 victory over Connecticut Friday night. Brent Baltus, Dylan Steman, Alex Gillies and Shane Hanna all scored for Tech. Jamie Phillips stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced in goal. Yale defeated Arizona State in the other semifinal.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost at 18th-ranked Minnesota State 3-1 Saturday night. On Friday, the Wildcats upended the Mavericks 3-1.

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team got past Lake Erie 45-38 on Saturday. The men’s team dropped a 63-54 decision to the Storm.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost to St. Scholastica 7-0 Saturday night. Those teams play again this afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

Meiners
Meiners

The Finlandia women’s hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to Manhattanville College at the Bruiser Bowl in Adrian on Saturday. The Valiants opened an early three-goal lead, but power play scores by Alena Fiala and Sierra Meiners narrowed the gap to one midway through the third period. Manhattanville added an insurance goal with four minutes remaining. Fiala responded with her second goal of the game, but the Valiants hung on for the victory. On Friday, the Lions lost to St. Olaf 4-1 at the Bruiser Bowl. Meiners scored the Lions only goal.

Daavettila
Daavettila

The Finlandia women’s basketball team scored the first eight points in their game at Crown College on Saturday, but Crown responded quickly, and cruised to an 82-64 win. Julia Daavettila scored 27 for the Lions, and grabbed 10 rebounds.

LaPlant
LaPlant

The Finlandia men’s team overcame a 10-point deficit in the final four minutes, and pulled out an 84-82 victory at Crown College. Jordan LaPlant led the Lions with 22 points. Marcus Geralds added 19.

Both Finlandia basketball teams lost at Minnesota-Morris Friday night. The women dropped an 80-59 decision. Brooke Pasanen led the Lions with 17 points, and Daavettila added 12 points and nine rebounds. The men fell 89-73. Geralds scored 27 for the Lions.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Calumet Wolverines 5-4 Saturday evening. On Friday, the Wolverines defeated the Marquette Iron Rangers 7-4. Josh Harju and Mike Babcock each scored twice for Calumet See video highlights here.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Anaheim tonight. We’ll join the game after Packers football on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

With Kyle Quincey ready to return from an injury, the Wings placed defenseman Jakub Kindl on waivers yesterday. Kindl was the team’s first-round draft pick in 2005, but has never solidified a place on the team. If he clears waivers at noon today, he can be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Detroit Pistons shut down the Brooklyn Nets 103-89 Saturday night. Reggie Jackson scored 23 points, and Andre Drummond had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who played without Marcus Morris. Morris is suffering from tendinitis in his left knee. He expects to return to the lineup when the Pistons host the San Antonio Spurs Tuesday evening.

NFL
In Saturday’s NFL Wild Card playoff games, the Chiefs eliminated the Texans 30-0. The Steelers got a 35-yard field goal from Chris Boswell in the closing seconds, and edged the Bengals 18-16. Pittsburgh led that game 15-0, but Cincinnati took the lead with 90 seconds remaining. The Steelers threw an interception on their first play after the kickoff, but the Bengals fumbled the ball back on the following play. Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who had left the game after suffering a shoulder injury, came back to lead the winning drive. With 22 seconds remaining, he overthrew receiver Antonio Brown, who was hit in the head by Vontaze Burfict. That 15-yard penalty, plus another 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty assessed against Adam Jones, set up the winning field goal.

Today, the Vikings entertain the Seahawks at 1:05, and the Packers visit Washington at 4:40. Hear all four games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Packers legend Bart Starr is recovering from a broken hip. Family members say the injury occurred three days before Christmas. Surgery will not be necessary, but the 82-year-old former quarterback will be confined to a wheelchair for six weeks.

The 2016 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships Freestyle distance events wrapped up with the Classic Sprints Saturday at the Tech Trails. Didrik Fjeld Elset from Michigan Tech placed third in the Master/Senior men’s race. Ian Torchia from Northern Michigan University won the men’s juniors. Sophie McDonald and Caroline Brisbois from NMU placed second and fourth in the women’s juniors. Check full results here.
