The state says nearly 1,500 veterans and their families have been helped this year by grants from the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund.

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency says more than $1.6 million in grants were awarded during fiscal year 2015 to help with short-term financial emergencies.

Total grants of $6.5 million were distributed to more than 5,500 veterans between fiscal year 2013 and fiscal year 2015.
