HS GBB Clip ArtIn girls high school basketball Friday night…
– L’Anse built a 25-8 halftime lead, and held off a spirited Baraga third-quarter comeback to earn a 51-34 victory on their home court. Carsyn Osterman of the Vikings led all scorers with 22 points – 16 in the second half. Sarah Dix led a balanced L’Anse attack with 11 points.
– Houghton defeated West Iron County 55-32. Sloane Zenner led the Gremlins with 18 points.
– Ontonagon beat Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 42-33.
– Jeffers smothered Bessemer 61-31.
– The Chassell game at Lake Linden-Hubbell was postponed. It will be made up tonight.

In Friday night’s only local boys game, Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Bessemer 74-57.

On the boys schedule tonight…
– Calumet entertains Ontonagon.
– Houghton hosts West Iron County.
– L’Anse welcomes Ewen-Trout Creek.

In high school hockey…
– At the Petoskey Showcase, L’Anse defeated Freeland 5-3 Saturday, and downed the host team 3-2 Friday night.

MTU Huskies LogoThe Michigan Tech men’s basketball team fell to Wisconsin-Parkside 70-64 Saturday evening. The Huskies trailed by a dozen with four minutes remaining. They narrowed the gap to three points when Luke Heller sank a free throw with 20 seconds left, but the Rangers closed the game out with three shots from the line. Kyle Monroe of the Huskies led all scorers with 22 points.

The Huskies women’s basketball team shut down Finlandia 96-34 on an exhibition game Saturday night. Nine different Tech players scored, led by Mackenzie Perttu with 24 points from eight three-pointers. Julia Daavettila scored 15 for the Lions.

The Northern Michigan University men’s team earned a 78-59 victory over Grace Bible College Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats women’s team lost to Bellarmine University 63-52 at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville yesterday. The Wildcats fell to Southern Indiana 63-43 Saturday afternoon.

Pioneers-Wolverines FeatureThe Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Monroe Blues 5-3 Saturday night. On Friday, Portage Lake defeated the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 7-5.

The Calumet Wolverines split their weekend series against the Marquette Iron Rangers, falling 5-3 Saturday night after winning 9-6 Friday night.

The Detroit Red Wings scored three times in the second period, and cruised past the Calgary Flames 4-2 last night. Dylan Larkin, Brad Richards and Gustav Nyquist lit the lamp, and Justin Abdelkader sealed the win with a late empty-netter. Petr Mrazek made 26 saves. The Wings host the New Jersey Devils tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons will visit the Miami Heat tomorrow night. Point guard Brandon Jennings will rejoin the Pistons after a successful game with Detroit’s D-League team in Grand Rapids over the weekend. Jennings is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon he suffered last January.

The Green Bay Packers scored two early touchdowns, and defeated the Oakland Raiders 30-20 yesterday. The Raiders rebounded from that early deficit, and took a three-point lead in the third quarter. The Packers responded with a quick touchdown, then added two field goals to put the game away. The win guarantees a playoff berth for the Packers, and keeps them in first place in the NFC North.

The Detroit Lions play at New Orleans tonight. Kickoff is at 8:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
