Bill Introduced to Undo State Immunization Rule

Parents who don’t want to get their kids vaccinated wouldn’t have to go in to their county public health department and sign a waiver, under a bill introduced in the Michigan House.

A rule change last year requires parents to talk with a nurse before they sign the waiver.

State Representative Tom Hooker is behind the measure and says it also wouldn’t allow a health department to pull unvaccinated kids out of school if just one student comes down with an illness.

Instead, there would have to be an epidemic for that to happen.

His legislation comes as the state is asking people to get their children vaccinated after four counties in the state had an outbreak of chickenpox.
