A group of Environmentalists and scientists have released a report they say underscores the need to shut down Enbridge’s pipeline running through the Straits of Mackinac and offers an alternative plan.
The Line 5 pipeline shuttles light crude oil to Canada and propane to the Upper Peninsula.
Gary Street, a chemical engineer, says both could be done using other existing pipelines.
He says that’s what Enbridge would do if Line 5 ruptured, spilling oil into the Great Lakes.
So instead of waiting for that disaster to happen, Street says just make the switch now.
He says Enbridge and the state should look at all alternatives possible, not just tanker trucks or barges.
The group, For Love of Water, or FLOW, presented its report to the state’s Pipeline Safety Advisory Board Monday.
