Governor Rick Snyder is joining in the push for a new lock to be built at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie.
Dave Nyberg, director of the governor’s Northern Michigan office, says building a new 1,000 foot lock is a priority.
The Army Corps of Engineers recently received the green light, and $1.35 million, to study replacing two small locks – which allow large ships to travel from Lake Superior to the lower Great Lakes – with one large one.
Congress first authorized funding for a new lock in 1986 but the money never materialized.
