Gremlins, Lakes Win V'ball Districts – Saturday Sports Wrap

– In Class B… Houghton edged Kingsford 3-2 to win the district title. The Gremlins will meet Sault Ste. Marie in the regional semifinal Tuesday at 6:00 at Munising.
– In Class D… Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Ontonagon 3-1 for the district title. The Lakes will face Stephenson in the regional semifinal Tuesday at 6:00 at Westwood.
– In Class C… after beating Ontonagon to earn the district title Thursday night, Calumet will face Manistique in the regional final Tuesday at 5:00 at Gladstone.

Here is the schedule of games involving teams from the Upper Peninsula:

In the Eight Man Division…
– North Central overpowered Rapid River 64-8.
– Cedarville edged Posen 22-20 in overtime.
North Central and Cedarville will meet in the semifinals next week. Battle Creek S. Philip and Deckerville will play in the other semifinal game.

In Division Eight…
– Forest Park edged Bark River-Harris 26-22.
– St. Ignace got past Johannesburg-Lewiston 16-8.
The Trojans and Saints will play in the regional final next week.

In Division Seven…
– Ishpeming eliminated Iron Mountain 24-14. The Hematites will face McBain in the regional final next week.

In Division Six…
– Calumet plays at Boyne City this afternoon at 1:00. Hear the game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The winner will take on Traverse City St. Francis, which mauled Mason County Central 61-12 last night.

In Division Five…
– Kingsford plays at Menominee this afternoon. The winner will face Grand Rapids West Catholic in the regional final.

MTU Huskies LogoMTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team spotted Alabama-Huntsville an early one goal lead, then came back to beat the Chargers 4-2 Friday night. Joel L’Esperance, Alex Petan, Brent Baltus and Mason Blacklock scored for the Huskies. Those teams play in Alabama again tonight.

The 20th-ranked Huskies’ football team plays at fifth-ranked Ashland this afternoon.

The MTU volleyball team earned a hard-fought win at Saginaw Valley State 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21) Friday night. The Huskies play at Wayne State this afternoon.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost at Alaska-Fairbanks 5-2 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight.

The NMU football team entertains third-ranked Ferris State today.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost to Wisconsin-Superior 10-0 Friday night. Those teams play again this afternoon at 2:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team welcomes Aurora University this evening at 7:00, and tomorrow at 2:15.

The football team is off this weekend.

The Lions women’s soccer team ended its season with a 15-0 loss to Agnes Scott College in the quarterfinals of the Great South Athletic Conference tournament on Friday. The Lions finish the season with a record of 1-14.

The Finlandia volleyball team opened the GSAC tournament with an easy 3-0 (25-7, 25-6, 25-16) win over Wesleyan College on Friday. The Lions will face the host team, Agnes Scott College, in the semifinals today at 1:00. The championship match will be played this evening at 6:00.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in overtime Friday night. Jakub Kindl’s goal a little more than two minutes into the extra period was the game winner. The Wings host the Stars tomorrow at 3:00.

GLHL
Calumet Wolverines LogoThe Calumet Wolverines opened their Great Lakes Hockey League season with a 13-10 loss at Marquette Friday night. The Wolverines return home to host the Monroe Blues tonight. Faceoff for the home opener is at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

The result of Friday’s Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Eagle River Falcons was not reported. The Pioneers visit the Marquette Iron Rangers for games tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons rode a strong second half to a 100-92 victory over the Phoenix Suns Friday night. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 23 points, and Marcus Morris added 20 against his former team. The Pistons play at Portland tomorrow night.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers visit the Carolina Panthers in a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Detroit Lions have this week off.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have parted ways with former Detroit Tigers infielder Hernan Perez. Milwaukee grabbed Perez off waivers when Detroit tried to send him to the minors this summer. On Friday, the Brewers removed him from their 40-man roster. Perez opted to become a free agent, rather than accept a minor league assignment.
