Legislation requiring Michigan veterinarians complete continuing education courses to renew their license has passed the state House.
Under the two-bill package, veterinarians seeking renewal of their license or veterinarian technician license would need to provide the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) with evidence of completion of continuing education courses.
Representative Hank Vaupel, who is a veterinarian, says it’s important that veterinarians continue their education because they are the first line of defense keeping our food chain free from disease and contamination.
The legislation would also allow Michigan pharmacies to fill prescriptions from out-of-state veterinarians.
Representative Ed McBroom says this has been an issue on the Wisconsin-Michigan border where Michigan pharmacists didn’t know they were breaking the law by filling prescriptions from Wisconsin veterinarians.
The bills now go to the Senate.
