Morning Sports for Wednesday, May 21st:

MLB: Tigers Drop Second Straight
Justin Verlander struggled, and the Tigers lost to the Indians 6-2 Tuesday night. Verlander gave up a run in the first… and surrendered four more in the second. Detroit’s runs came on homers by Torii Hunter and Alex Avila.

The Tigers will try to salvage the final game of that series at Cleveland this afternoon. Max Scherzer will face Zach McAllister. Hear the first pitch at 12:05 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Brewers Drop Fourth Straight
The Brewers lost their fourth game in a row Tuesday night… 5-0 to the Braves. Julio Teheran held Milwaukee batters to six hits, as he threw a complete-game shutout. Brewers’ starter Yovani Gallardo gave up three runs in the third inning, and another in the fourth before leaving with a sprained ankle he suffered while fielding a ground ball. He’s listed as day-to-day. The Brewers continue that series at Atlanta tonight. Kyle Lohse will pitch against Ervin Santana.

There was a scary moment in Tuesday’s game when a line drive foul ball hit by Milwaukee batter Carlos Gomez struck a young boy in the head. Play was halted while the boy was taken to a first aid station. He was later evaluated at a hospital. Braves’ officials say the boy was conscious and talking before he left the stadium. There was no further word on his condition.

Milwaukee relief pitcher Jim Henderson will begin a rehab assignment with double-A Huntsville tomorrow. Henderson is recovering from shoulder inflammation.

Pistons Lose First-Round Draft Pick
The Detroit Pistons will not have a pick in the first round of this year’s NBA Draft. At the lottery to determine the selection order of the first 14 picks last night, Detroit placed ninth. They had promised their first-round pick to Charlotte as part of the Ben Gordon for Corey Maggette deal two years ago… unless the pick was in the top eight. If this year’s pick had been protected, Charlotte would have gotten Detroit’s first-round pick next year. The Pistons will have a pick in the second round… number-38 overall.

Aijala Transfers to Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team has picked up a transfer student for next season. Jeanna Aijala averaged 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals per game as a sophomore at Gogebic Community College in the 2012-2013 season. Aijala played high school ball at Hurley. During her senior year, she led the Midgets to a 24-2 record and was named the All-Indianhead Conference Most Valuable Player.

Johnson Inks Deal with Devils
Calumet native Ben Johnson has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils. Johnson played for the Windsor Spitfires last season… and achieved career highs with 28 goals and 25 assists… with a plus, minus rating of plus 18. Johnson could spend another season in Windsor or play with the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League. A cloud remains over his future, though. Johnson still faces charges in Windsor for two separate alleged sexual assaults. The Windsor Star reports he’s set to go to trial on one of those charges next month. The other is set for a preliminary hearing next month.
