Houghton High School will be seeing new coaches and new breakfast options in the coming weeks.
Monday night’s Houghton- Portage Township District school board meeting started out with an audit report that reflected a healthy fund balance for the district.
Governor Snyder recently signed a new teacher evaluation method into law. The measure requires school districts to base at least 25 percent of a teacher’s evaluation on assessment and student growth data. The component will rise to 40 percent in 2018-19.
In athletics, Fall sports are drawing to an end as Winter sports begin to practice and even compete.
The school board approved the hiring of some new coaches. On the list are assistant golf, assistant swim, hockey assistant, JV hockey and a girls track head coach.
The Middle School’s First Lego League team recently competed in the Copper Country Qualifier regional tournament and took home the Robot Design award.
Houghton High School finished a successful college application week, the goal of which is to encourage High School Seniors to apply for at least 1 college. Prior to the week, 36 students had completed a college application. 40 more students applied to at least one college by the end of the week, totaling over 118 applications in just one week.
High School student council members presented the school board with new snack options thanks to a grant from the Dairy Association. The grant awarded Houghton High School with a new smoothie blender. Student Council members recently sampled and surveyed the student body on preferred fruit blends and presented the results to the board. Soon, the high school will be offering mixed berry, strawberry and strawberry banana smoothies to students during breakfast. The smoothies are made from fresh and frozen fruit, yogurt, and milk. The school hopes to offer the smoothies at lunch time as well, but there is a limit on how much juice can be served, and fresh fruit is considered juice once it is pureed. The student council reported that 70% of students surveyed said they would purchase a smoothie as a lunch or breakfast item.
The next Houghton-Portage Township School board meeting will take place on December 14th at Houghton Elementary School.
