MTU Volleyball Reaches Playoffs – Sunday Sports Wrap

The 20th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team had to settle for a split in their series with 15th-rated Bowling Green, after falling to the Falcons 3-2 Saturday night. Mark Cooper hit the game-winner just over four minutes into the third period. A late Tech goal that would have tied the game late in the third period was disallowed after referees ruled the Huskies were offsides. Jamie Phillips made 22 saves in the losing effort. Tech won the opening game of the series 2-0 Friday night.

The Tech volleyball team clinched a spot in the GLIAC playoffs with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-21) victory at Lake Superior State on Saturday. The Huskies finish the season with a record of 19-11 – their highest win total since 2008. Tech will make its first playoff appearance since 2009 when it opens at top-seeded Ferris State Wednesday evening at 7:00. The Huskies needed Saturday’s win, after dropping a 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 18-25, 10-15) decision at Northwood Friday night.

The Huskies football team closed its season with an explosive 63-23 victory at Lake Erie on Saturday. The Storm struck early, with two quick touchdowns, but the Huskies roared back. They piled up 601 yards of offense, including 437 on the ground. Brandon Cowie ran for two touchdowns, and passed for another. John Williams rushed for two scores. The Huskies close their season with a record of 7-3.

The eighth-ranked Tech women’s basketball team cruised past Minnesota-Duluth 72-43 Saturday. Morgan Anderson scored 17 points, and Kylie Moxley contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds. The Huskies defense held the Bulldogs to just 15 points in the first half.

Findlay University kicked a last-second field goal, and edged the Northern Michigan University football team 45-42 Saturday. The Wildcats finish their season with a record of 5-6.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team had the weekend off.

The NMU women’s basketball team opened its season with an 89-60 loss to Quincy at the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge Saturday night. The Wildcats will face Truman State University from Missouri this afternoon.

Finlandia
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost 5-0 to Concordia-Wisconsin Saturday evening. Concordia outshot Finlandia 49-14. The Lions and Falcons skated to a 3-3 tie Friday night.

The Finlandia women’s team dropped a 9-1 decision at Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday. The Lions were outshot 54-9. Finlandia lost 9-0 at Lake Forest College Friday afternoon.

The Lions football team wrapped up its inaugural season with a 59-7 loss at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati Saturday. Finlandia’s only touchdown came on a 25-yard pass play from Ronald Brown to Darrion Robinson in the first quarter. The Lions finish their first season with a record of 3-7.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team lost a tight 67-64 game to Marian University Saturday. The Lions jumped on to early, and built a 16-point lead, but the Sabres closed the gap to five at halftime. The teams stayed neck-and-neck until Marian’s Josh Creed tied the game with a layup with 92 seconds remaining, and sank a free thrown to give his team the lead. The Sabres made two additional free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. Brandon Robinson led Finlandia with 19 points. Brandon Robinette added 17, and Marcus Geralds 16.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team opened its season with a 92-45 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday. Karrah Bakker led the Lions with 10 points.

NHL
The Boston Bruins erupted for three goals in the second period, and defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 Saturday night. Petr Mrazek took the loss in net. Justin Abdelkader scored Detroit’s only goal on a power play in the third period. The Red Wings cross the border to face the Senators tomorrow night.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons fell to the Los Angeles Clippers 101-96 Saturday afternoon. Ersan Ilyasova and reggie Jackson each scored 20 points for Detroit. Andre Drummond had 18 points and 19 rebounds. The Pistons have lost three straight, and face the Lakers in Los Angeles tonight.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers host the Detroit Lions this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Lions will finish the season without cornerback Rashean Mathis. Mathis was placed on injured reserve after suffering concussion symptoms. At age 35, his career may be over.
