Morning Sports for Saturday, May 17th:

MLB: Tigers Edge Red Sox
Torii Hunter singled in the only run of the game in the first inning… as the Tigers edged the Red Sox 1-0 Friday night. Max Scherzer pitched into the seventh… outlasting a 47-minute rain delay to earn his sixth win of the season. Ian Krol, Joba Chamberlain and Joe Nathan pitched 2-2/3rds innings of hitless relief. The Tigers continue that series at Boston tonight. Rick Porcello will face John Lackey. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Tigers’ reliever Luke Putkonen has been pulled from his rehab assignment in Toledo, after feeling more discomfort in his pitching elbow. Putkonen has been out for a month with what was initially believed to be inflammation. He’ll visit a specialist on Wednesday. Putkonen underwent Tommy John ligament surgery on that elbow 10 years ago, when he was in college.

Reliever Joel Hanrahan’s recovery from Tommy John surgery is on hold for a few days. Hanrahan was signed several weeks ago by the Tigers, and is rehabbing in Lakeland. The team says the suspension of his activities came after he felt weakness in the arm. They don’t think it’s a long-term problem, and they still hope he might be ready to join the club next month.

Brewers Outlast Cubs
The Brewers scored twice in the first inning, and twice in the second… and held on to beat the Cubs 4-3. Kyle Lohse surrendered a pair of homers… but lasted seven innings, and earned his fifth win of the season. Francisco Rodriguez collected his 17th save. The Brewers continue that series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field this afternoon. Matt Garza will pitch against Edwin Jackson.

Finlandia Adds Men’s Hockey Player
Finlandia University has added a new men’s hockey player to next season’s roster. James Devlin is a forward from Lowell Massachusetts. Last season, he scored seven goals and added 11 assists in 41 games for the Boston Junior Rangers of the Eastern Hockey League.

Gun and Knife Show Continues Today
The ninth annual Gun and Knife Show opens this afternoon at a new location – the Houghton County Arena. The show will be open today from 9:00 until 5:00. Admission is $5.00 per person. A portion of the admission fee will be donated to area clubs for deer feed. Concessions will be provided by the Copper Country Junior Hockey association.
