A measure to protect EMTs and paramedics from getting sued if they provide emergency medical care while off duty has cleared a House committee.
Right now only doctors and nurses have those protections.
Providing care during an emergency, like a car accident, or at a sporting event would be okay under the legislation.
State Senator Goeff Hansen is sponsoring the bill.
The former firefighter and EMT tells a House Committee he’s helped at car crashes and when kids have gotten hurt at football games while off duty.
And even though Hansen did lend a hand then he says it would have been nice to not have to worry about being liable.
The measure now awaits a vote in the full Michigan House.
The bill passed the Senate last month.
