In the high school volleyball tournament last night…
– In Class C, Hancock got past Ironwood 3-2, and Calumet eliminated L’Anse 3-0. The Bulldogs and Copper Kings will meet for the district title. The location and time have not been announced.

Tonight…
– In Class B, Houghton entertains Menominee. The winner will face the winner of tonight’s match between Kingsford and Gladstone.
– In Class D at Ontonagon, Lake Linden-Hubbell faces Chassell at 6:00, and Ontonagon meets Dollar Bay at 7:30.

The MTU soccer team played Ashland to a 1-1 tie through two overtime periods in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament yesterday. The game finally went to the Eagles on penalty kicks, 5-3. The Huskies finish the season with a record of 9-7-1.

The Tech volleyball team won the first set, but wound up dropping a tight 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 21-25, 17-25) match to Northern Michigan University last night.

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team opened its season with a 7-1 loss to St. Scholastica last night. The Lions were outshot 51-12.

Dylan Larkin’s third-period goal lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. Riley Sheahan also scored for Detroit, and Jimmy Howard made 28 saves. The Wings have won two straight, and skate at Toronto Friday night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons suffered their first loss of the season last night, falling 94-82 the Indiana Pacers. Former Piston Rodney Stuckey led Indiana with 23 points. Andre Drummond led all scorers with 25 points, and grabbed 29 rebounds. The Pistons play at Phoenix Friday.

The Detroit Tigers officially declined the option on closer Joe Nathan’s contract yesterday. The decision came as no surprise. Nathan missed the entire 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. At age 41, he says he still hopes to return to the major leagues sometime next season.

Pitcher Shane Greene threw the ball yesterday for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in August. The operation corrected a condition that was causing numbness in his throwing hand.
