Lakes Beat Vikes – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
Lake Linden Hubbell LogoIn the high school volleyball tournament last night, Lake Linden-Hubbell shut out Baraga 3-0 in the opening round of the Class D District. The Lakes will face Chassell tomorrow evening at 6:00 in Ontonagon. The host Gladiators will play Dollar Bay at 7:30.

Ewen-Trout Creek was eliminated by Wakefield-Marenisco 3-0 at Ewen last night.

The Class C District opens tonight. Hancock plays at Ironwood. L’Anse plays at Calumet at 7:00.

In Class B, Kingsford defeated Escanaba 3-2. The Flivvers will face Gladstone tomorrow night. Houghton opens the tournament at home against Menominee tomorrow night.

The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association has handed out its football honors. Running backs Robert Erkkila from Calumet and Blake Dupuis from Lake Linden-Hubbell were named to the All-School Dream Team. Lucas Klein of the Lakes was named to the Dream Team as a defensive end.

In the Large School Division, Calumet’s Jake Anderson was selected as an offensive lineman, and Sam Kariniemi was picked as a defensive back.

In the Small School Division, Lake Linden-Hubbell was voted Class D Team of the Year for its undefeated regular season. Blake Dupuis was named Offensive Player of the Year, and Andy Crouch was named Class D Coach of the Year. Austin Serotzke was selected as an offensive tackle, and Brendan Middleton was named as a return specialist.

The MTU soccer team opens play at the GLIAC tournament at Ashland this afternoon. The Huskies are seeded sixth.

The Tech volleyball team entertains Northern Michigan University tonight at 7:00.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team lost to Hamline University 2-1 yesterday. The Pipers scored the winning goal in the final minute. The Lions finish the season with a record of 11-7 – the best in school history. They set numerous team records, and Alex Freeman set a number of individual records, including most goals in a season. All of Finlandia’s players were either freshmen or sophomores. Find out more about their record-setting season here.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team opens its season at home against St. Scholastica tonight at 7:00.

The Detroit Red Wings host the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons host the Indiana Pacers tonight.

Andre Drummond has been named the NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week. He’s the first Piston to be named Player of the Week since Rodney Stuckey was honored six years ago.

In last night’s NFL game, the Carolina Panthers remained unbeaten, with a 29-26 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have picked at least 13 games correctly to be eligible to be our weekly winner.
