Calumet Copper Kings LogoThe Calumet Copper Kings advanced to the regional finals of the state high school football tournament with a convincing 24-14 victory over Negaunee. The Copper Kings scored on their opening drive. Robert Erkkila ran four yards for the score. On their second drive, the Kings were forced to punt, but the ball was mishandled by the Miners, and Calumet recovered. Quarterback Russ Bjorn completed the short drive with a four-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds of the first quarter. Two point conversions were successful after both scores. Negaunee struck back – George Johnson’s one-yard plunge midway through the second quarter made the score 16-6, which is where it remained at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, Bjorn ran four yards for the Kings’ final touchdown with 8:29 remaining. A successful two-point conversion increased Calumet’s lead to 24-6. The Miners scored on a one-yard run by quarterback Brock Aho with 7:09 remaining, but Negaunee could get no closer. Calumet snuffed a late scoring drive when Bjorn intercepted an Aho pass. It is believed to be the first Calumet victory over Negaunee since 1956.

The Copper Kings will travel to Boyne City next weekend to face the Ramblers, who eliminated Oscoda 55-20 Friday night.
