Despite their weekend split with Northern Michigan University, the MTU hockey team remains nationally ranked. The Huskies dropped to 18th in this week’s USCHO.com poll. The Tech football team fell to 22nd in the latest AFCA Division II Coaches’ Poll after losing to Ferris State on Saturday.

The Detroit Red Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes this evening. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Pavel Datsyuk skated briefly with the team during practice yesterday. He’s recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his ankle, and hopes to be able to rejoin the team on two or three weeks. Defenseman Mike Green will miss two or three weeks because of an upper body injury suffered in Friday’s game against Calgary. Defenseman Kyle Quincey will miss at least three more games after suffering a concussion in that same contest.

The Detroit Pistons open their regular season tonight at Atlanta against the Hawks.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Arizona Cardinals defeated the Baltimore Ravens 26-18. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least 11 games correctly to be eligible to be this week’s winner.

Detroit Lions LionThe Detroit Lions have shaken up their offensive coaching staff. Coordinator Joe Lombardi has been fired, along with line coaches Jeremiah Washburn and Terry Heffernan. Quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter becomes the new offensive coordinator and play caller. Detroit’s offense ranks 26th in the NFL.

MLB
The World Series opens tonight, as the New York Mets face the Royals in Kansas City.

L'Anse Purple Hornets LogoThe annual Zombie Run will be held Thursday afternoon at the L’Anse High School track. Registration is open from 4:00 until 4:45. The Monster Mile for kids ages 12 and younger will begin at 5:00. The 5K for teens and adults will begin at 5:30.

The high school football playoffs open Friday evening, when Calumet visits Negaunee. On Saturday afternoon, Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Forest Park. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
