State Police Conduct Sweep Of Convicted Sex Offenders

Just how many registered sex offenders are living in our neighborhoods who have not properly notified the public of where they are?

A major sweep of several Upper Peninsula communities shows that there may be a lot.

In Marquette County, several law enforcement offices came together for a two month address verification sweep of convicted sex offenders.

They found 10 violations of offenders who had failed to change their address after moving as required by law.

A total of 10 arrest warrants have been requested through the Marquette County Prosecutors Office.

The Michigan Sex Offenders Registration Act requires registered sex offenders to regularly report to their local law enforcement agency, sheriff’s office, or nearest state police post to verify their address.

Tier 1 offenders must verify their address annually, Tier 2 offenders must verify their address semi-annually, and Tier 3 offenders must verify their address quarterly.

Failure to do so carries a penalty of up to two years of incarceration.

There’s been no word on whether a similar sweep is to be conducted in Houghton County and the surrounding areas.

[Negaunee MI]. Michigan State Police troopers from the Negaunee Post, along with the Marquette City, Negaunee City, Ishpeming Police Departments, Chocolay and Forsyth Township Police Departments, NMU Department of Public Safety, and the Marquette County Sheriff Department, have just concluded a two month address verification sweep of convicted sex offenders in Marquette County. 198 residences were checked with 10 violations being found of offenders who have failed to change their address after moving as required by law. A total of 10 arrest warrants have been requested through the Marquette County Prosecutors Office.

All registered sex offenders must also report a change of name, address, employment, campus enrollment, internet identifiers and vehicle within three business days of any change. Failure to do so is four-year felony.
