The 34th Annual Eighth Grade Girls’ Basketball Tournament is being held in Calumet. In Division II yesterday, Calumet defeated Stanton 52-24. Ellen Sturos had 16 for the Copper Kings, while Lilly Tuner had 10 for Stanton. Baraga defeated Ontonagon 56-44. Madelyn Turpeinen led Baraga with 15 points. Calumet and Baraga will play for the Division II title at 4:00 this afternoon.

In Division I, Houghton defeated L’Anse 42-36. Rachel Hall led Houghton with 13 points, while Addison Mattson had 14 for L’Anse. Hancock defeated Jeffers 38-17. Taylor Sebbas had 11 points for Hancock, while Brenna Hill led Jeffers with 7. Hancock will play Houghton in the Division I Championship this afternoon at 5:30.

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team lost to Mount Mary University 1-0 yesterday.

The Finlandia University volleyball team defeated Gogebic Community College 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 25-23, 25-12) last evening.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Edmonton tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 9:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Hornets in a preseason game tomorrow night.

MLB
In the American League Championship Series last night, the Toronto Blue Jays outslugged the Kansas City Royals 11-8. Those teams play at Toronto again this afternoon. KC leads the best-of-seven set two games to one.

The National League Championship series resumes this evening, when the Chicago Cubs host the New York Mets. New York leads that series two games to none.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris will undergo surgery for thyroid cancer. Norris says the diagnosis was made early in the summer, and doctors said it was okay to delay surgery until after the season. Tigers’ officials say they knew about the diagnosis when they obtained Norris from the Blue Jays in a trade. A full recovery is expected.

Tigers’ pitching coach Jeff Jones has announced his retirement.

NFL
In last night’s game NFL game, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New York Giants 27-7. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least 10 games correctly to be eligible to be our weekly winner.

The season is over for Detroit Lions rookie running back Zach Zenner. The team placed him on injured reserve yesterday, after he suffered several cracked ribs and a collapsed lung in Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bears.
