Michigan House Passes a Package of Bills to Strengthen Domestic Violence Laws

The Michigan House has passed a series of bills aimed at strengthening the states domestic violence laws.

One bill would allow a woman to go to court to strip an abuser of parenting rights if they are the child’s father.

Another would allow victims to claim a pet on a Personal Protection Order.

A third would include domestic violence victims who are pregnant in an assault and battery law already on the books.

State Representative Harvey Santana, D-Detroit, sponsored one of the five bills that passed Thursday and says Michigan was once a leader in domestic violence protections but has fallen behind other states.

The legislation now moves to the Michigan Senate.
