Get Paid for Your Old Appliances Saturday at HEET Energy Show

HOUGHTON—Upper Peninsula Power Co. customers can recycle their old refrigerators, freezers and more Saturday at the HEET Energy Show—and get paid for their trouble.

Efficiency UNITED is accepting working freezers, refrigerators, room air conditioners and dehumidifiers (sorry, no stoves or electronics) between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Dee Stadium. To participate, bring a recent UPPCO bill along with your clean, empty appliances to the Energy Show. You will receive $50 each for refrigerators and freezers and $15 for dehumidifiers and air conditioners.

“This is a great way to get rid of that energy-hogging appliance, especially if you are moving up to a new energy-efficient model,” said Melissa Davis, manager of the Houghton Energy Efficiency Team (HEET), which is sponsoring the event. “Old refrigerators use up to four times as much electricity as the latest ENERGY STAR brands.”

If you are unable to bring your freezer or refrigerator, you can schedule a pickup at your home with the recycling firm JACO Environmental. However, appointments are limited and JACO will not pick up dehumidifiers or air conditioners unless you are also recycling a larger appliance.
