A measure to exempt people under the age of 21 from criminal penalties who are trying to get help for themselves or someone else for a prescription drug overdose has cleared a House committee.
The idea is to not punish someone who is asking for help.
The legislation, sponsored by State Representative Al Pscholka, is in response to the death of Watervliet teen Mason Mizwicki, who died of a methadone overdose at a New Year’s Eve party.
The legislation is similar to an existing law that provides immunity to minors who report an alcohol-related medical emergency.
The bill now awaits a vote in the full Michigan House.
