Bills to Make Coercing a Woman to Have an Abortion a Crime Head to the Full House

Bills to make coercing a woman into an abortion is headed to the full House.

The legislation would define coercion in cases of abortion and set up varying penalties depending on the severity of the crime.

Ed Rivet of Michigan Right to Life says he’s heard time and again from women who were being pressured by family, spouses, or others to have an abortion.

He says coercion is happening and this legislation will give women some protection.

Opponents of the bills say women being coerced into unwanted pregnancies is a more common problem and want the legislation expanded to cover those situations.

Attempts were made to change the bills, however a House committee passed the legislation without amendment.
