The new fiscal year, which begins next week, opens up an opportunity to see how many rape kits still need to be tested in Michigan.
$1.7 million is set aside in the new state budget to process the untested kits.
Attorney General Bill Schuette sent a letter to prosecutors and police department’s Friday to find out how many untested kits they have.
Those departments have until October 9th to get back to the AG’s office.
A backlog of 10,000 untested rape kits found in Detroit in 2009 was recently cleared freeing up resources to test rape kits from outside of Wayne County.
